What does kitchen installation include?

A kitchen installation quote should describe the work, rather than rely on the phrase “fully fitted”. Cabinet assembly, securing units, fitting fronts and completing trims may be one part of a much wider project.

A dry-fit quote may exclude service connections, removal or decorating. The meaning varies between providers, so ask for a written list of inclusions and exclusions for your particular kitchen.

01
Cabinets and finishing pieces

Confirm base and wall units, tall housings, door and drawer alignment, handles, fillers, end panels, plinths and decorative trims. Check whether units arrive assembled or need building.

02
Worktops, sinks and appliances

Clarify fitting, cut-outs, templating and any separate specialist visits. Positioning an appliance or sink is not necessarily the same as connecting it or commissioning it.

03
Removal and the surrounding room

Establish who removes the old kitchen, prepares walls and floors, protects the house and disposes of waste. Tiling, painting and extra repairs should be identified rather than assumed.

Make the room ready

Before your new kitchen is fitted

The kitchen plan, product order and actual room need to agree. A pre-installation survey helps reveal gaps while there is still time to resolve them.

1

Check the final plan

Share measurements, product codes and appliance specifications. Confirm clearances, door swings and the position of fixed services with the people responsible for the work.

2

Check deliveries

Identify who orders every item and checks for shortages or damage. Allow suitable dry storage and agree how missing parts would affect the fitting schedule.

3

Agree room preparation

Set out what must happen before fitting: removal, repairs, preparation and any planned service work. Coordinate the sequence with the fitter and other trades.

4

Prepare for disruption

Clear cupboards and access routes, protect belongings and plan temporary food preparation. Ask when water, cooking and other facilities will be unavailable.

See how the work fits together

The kitchen fitting process

Your installer should confirm the actual order and timing. Worktop material, room preparation and other trades can change the sequence.

1

Survey and scope

Review the design against the room, confirm responsibilities and agree the work, price and start conditions.

2

Prepare and fit units

Complete the agreed preparatory work, then position, secure and align the cabinets according to the approved plan and product requirements.

3

Coordinate specialist work

Arrange worktops, appliances and connections at the appropriate stages. Some worktops require a separate template and installation visit.

4

Inspect and hand over

Check doors, drawers and finishing details, record any remaining items, and collect the relevant instructions, records and agreed warranty information.

One project needs clear responsibility

Ask who coordinates the fitter, worktop supplier and any plumbing, electrical or gas work. Relevant work needs suitably qualified specialists. Establish who handles any necessary checks and documentation before agreeing the programme.

Budget for the complete scope

How much does kitchen fitting cost?

Kitchen fitting cost depends on the quantity and complexity of units, the state of the room and what the installer is responsible for. A labour-only cabinet fit cannot be compared directly with a project that includes removal and multiple trades.

Separate product costs from installation costs, and compare the same written scope. Discuss how additional work will be assessed, authorised and priced if a problem is uncovered.

01
Units and installation detail

Assembly requirements, tall units, islands, bespoke adjustments and the number of finishing components influence the labour involved.

02
Room and service work

Removal, wall or floor repairs, new service positions and making good can affect the total. Ask which trades and materials are included.

03
Worktops and project extras

Confirm worktop fitting, specialist visits, waste disposal, access costs and VAT. Record exclusions and agreed payment stages in writing.

Choose the right level of work

Kitchen fitting or a full renovation?

If the design and product choices are settled and you need them installed, a kitchen fitting brief may be your starting point. If the room needs a new layout, wider preparation or a more substantial rethink, explore full kitchen renovation.

You may need less work if your current cabinets and layout still suit you. Replacement kitchen doors, cabinet respraying or kitchen wrapping can be considered for suitable existing units.

Kitchen installation FAQs

Practical answers about preparation, timing and fitting arrangements.

Can I supply my own kitchen and arrange fitting separately?

It may be possible if the fitter agrees to work with the chosen system. Share the complete design, product list and installation instructions early. Confirm who takes responsibility for measurements, missing items and product issues.

How long does it take to fit a kitchen?

The schedule depends on room preparation, unit complexity, deliveries, worktop stages and specialist trades. Ask for a programme that separates preparatory work, fitting, connections and final completion rather than relying on a single headline duration.

Does a fitting quote include removal of the old kitchen?

Only if this is specified. Removal, service disconnection, waste disposal and room preparation may be separate items. Check all four before agreeing a price or start date.

Are plumbing, gas and electrical connections included?

Do not assume they are. Identify each connection and any changes needed, who will perform them and what documentation applies. A cabinet fitter’s quote may cover a different scope from those specialist tasks.

Can I keep my existing worktops or appliances?

Possibly, subject to condition, compatibility and whether they can be retained or removed without damage. Confirm this before finalising the design and order, and agree who assesses the existing items.

What happens if parts are missing or the room needs extra work?

Agree how delays and variations will be managed before starting. Record additional work and its price for approval, and identify who contacts the supplier or arranges replacement parts.
